About this programme

Description

The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), in cooperation with the Efficiency Valuation Organisation (EVO), has established the Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP®) programme with the dual purpose of recognising the most qualified professionals in this growing area of the energy industry, and raising overall professional standards within the M&V field.

The International Performance Measurement & Verification Protocol (IPMVP), on which the CMVP® training programme is based, is the internationally recognised protocol for performance M&V and provides a consistent, reliable approach to M&V around the world.

CMVP® is a 3-day training course with a voluntary examination on the next day or later date, providing a platform to possible certification with the AEE and a career path in a fast growing M&V market.

Course Outline

  • Overview of M&V protocols and methodologies
  • Compliance to IPMVP
  • South African M&V guidelines for Eskom, the Energy Accord, tax incentives and the local M&V framework
  • M&V planning activities
  • Typical M&V issues and baseline adjustments
  • Definition of energy efficiency savings
  • Many case studies and examples

Steps to Certification

  1. Attend the CMVP® training course with an AEE approved training partner.
  2. Write the CMVP® examination and attain a 70%+ pass mark.
  3. Complete your CMVP® certification application and return it to your training provider timeously.
  4. The local and international CMVP® Board will review your application.
  5. Your training provider will advise you of the Board's decision.
  6. If you receive CMVPIT (in-training) status, you may re-apply for certification within 3 years.

Outcomes

On completion of the CMVP® course you will understand the international protocols, methodologies and tools to quantify the performance risks of energy, renewable energy and water efficiency, and be able to perform M&V tasks on energy savings projects.

Upon certification from the AEE, delegates may apply to the Council for Measurement and Verification of South Africa (CMVPSA) to further their careers in the South African M&V market.

Delegate Profile

There are no pre-requisites to attend the training course — it is open to all interested parties. Pre-requisites only apply when a candidate wishes to write the examination and apply for international certification. Ideal for:

  • Persons that need to verify energy savings for tax incentive purposes and risk assessment of energy efficiency projects
  • Professionals needing standardised methods, protocols and tools to quantify and manage energy performance risks for business transactions in water, energy, and renewable energy
  • Energy auditors, architects, built environment, engineering, and environmental graduates
  • Persons seeking recognition as specialists in Measurement and Verification (M&V)
  • Those planning many energy efficiency projects as part of an energy management plan and needing to ensure accurate reporting of savings for triple bottom line reporting

Basic Skill Requirements

Basic problem-solving skills, including quick and accurate use of a hand calculator and the ability to use basic algebra.

Examination

A 4-hour voluntary examination may be written on the next day or a later date, subject to pre-application and registration. Pre-registration and 85%+ attendance of class-based training are required. An alternative examination day may be registered for within three years of attending the course.

Should you fail the examination, you may register for a rewrite within three years. Rewrites must be written at least 60 days apart.

All delegates attending more than 85% of the CMVP® training course will receive a certificate of attendance with ECSA CPD credits. AEE Examination results will only be released by the EnTF's AEE Certification department to candidates in good standing with the EnTF.

Each CMVP® candidate must attend the training, pass the 4-hour written examination with 70%, and meet one of the following criteria:

  • A 4-year degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or a related field, or a registered P.E. / R.A. (within South Africa: PrEng, PrArch) with at least 3 years' experience in energy, building or facility management, or measurement and verification
  • A 3-year technical degree (within South Africa: PrTechEng, PSAT) with at least 4 years' experience in energy, building or facility management, or M&V
