Outcomes

On completion of the CEM® course you will be able to immediately implement solutions to enable energy efficiency. On obtaining certification with the AEE you will be one of thousands of distinguished professionals in the international energy engineering fraternity.

Delegate Profile

There are no pre-requisites to attend the training course — it is a public course open to all interested parties. Pre-requisites only come into play when a candidate wishes to write the exam and apply for international certification. Ideal for:

  • Persons needing to find ways of saving energy through reduced fuel costs, electrical use, transport requirements, improved supply chain, water savings, etc.
  • Professionals working in energy management who would like a recognised qualification within the energy engineering career path
  • Architects, built environment, engineering, and environmental graduates seeking new doors in the world's fastest growing industry
  • Persons that need to implement an energy management strategy, determine a baseline, and implement a range of energy saving activities
  • Professionals seeking recognition for staying current with the latest developments in the energy industry
  • Those responsible for obtaining ISO50001 accreditation and implementing SABS50010 standards to qualify for financial energy saving incentives

Basic Skill Requirements

Basic problem-solving skills, including quick and accurate use of a hand calculator, the ability to use basic algebra, and to set up problem solution expressions and calculations from a written problem statement.

Examination

The CEM® examination may be written on the next day or a later date, subject to pre-application and registration. This is additional to the course cost and duration days. There is no obligation to write the exam on the last day — an alternative examination day may be registered for within three years of attending the course.

Pre-registration and 85%+ attendance of class-based training are required. Should you fail the examination, you may register for a rewrite within three years. Rewrites must be written at least 60 days apart.

All delegates attending more than 85% of the CEM® training course will receive a certificate of attendance with ECSA CPD credits. AEE Examination results will only be released by the EnTF's AEE Certification department to candidates in good standing with the EnTF.

Eligibility For Certification

Each CEM® candidate must attend the training, pass the written 4-hour examination with 70%, and meet one of the following criteria:

  • A 4-year engineering or architectural degree, or a registered P.E. / R.A. (within South Africa: PrEng, PrArch) with at least 3 years' experience in energy engineering or energy management
  • A 3-year technical degree (within South Africa: PrTechEng, PSAT) with at least 4 years' experience in energy engineering or energy management
  • A 4-year business or related degree, with at least 5 years' experience in energy engineering or energy management
  • A 2-year technical degree (within South Africa: PrTechniEng, PAT) with 8 years' experience in energy engineering or energy management
  • 10 or more years of verified experience in energy engineering or energy management

Re-certification is required every 3 years subject to participation in the AEE continuing education program (CEP).
